Ephemeral Mists is the newest side project by composer Brett Branning (The synthetic dream foundation & Abandoned Toys). The debut album, "Moon Ritual" is out now on Mythical records.

The sound of the project is best described as downtempo ambient electronics mixed with ethnic world musics in the vein of "Karma" era Delerium, Amethystium, and Dead Can Dance. Its really a very intoxicatingly beautiful creation and I highly recommend it to anyone into ambient music styles.

With a background in jazz, dance, and theater, Maggie Nicols became an early pioneer in the European free improvisation scene when she joined John Stevens’ Spontaneous Music Ensemble in the late 1960’s. The Scottish-born performer would soon develop into one of the most unique and innovative vocalists in avant-garde music. Nicols is an artist of distinct individuality. Her agile and wordless improvisations are countered by the devilish sense of humor that she displays when she ad-libs speech into her pieces. Maggie Nicols is an active teacher and leader of workshops that fuse her experiences in music, improvisation, theater, yoga, and activism. Though she is a veteran (she began her career in the early 60’s) and is recognized as the pioneer in her field, Nicols has only ever performed a few times in the United States. A wide ranging talent and prolific artist, Fred Frith first gained attention in the early 1970’s as guitarist for the pioneering English avant-garde rock band Henry Cow. Frith has distinguished himself as a guitar player, composer, improvisor, and collaborator. His versatility brings different approaches to his instrument depending on a particular playing situation (i.e., the prepared ‘table-top’ approach or the conventional guitar approach). The range of his collaborators gives an indication as to the scope of his talent and style. A short list of Frith’s partners includes: Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill, Robert Wyatt, Brian Eno, Zeena Parkins, Tom Cora and John Zorn (Frith was the bass player in Naked City). Perhaps the world’s premiere avant-gardist on her instrument, Susan Alcorn has taken the steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country and western swing music. Well-known among steel players for her virtuosity and authenticity in a traditional context, Susan Alcorn first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands. Soon she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of modern classical music (Olivier Messiaen and Krystof Penderecki), avant-garde jazz (John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman), and world music (Indian rags, South American songs, and gamelan orchestra). As a composer, Alcorn has proven to be visionary. Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and her musical experience, while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression. The premiere pianist in this generation of avant-garde jazz musicians, Matthew Shipp has forged a body of work that is a testament to the breadth and power of his vision. Shortly after his arrival in New York in 1984, he was working as a sideman with prominent musicians such as William Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, and David S. Ware. It wasn't long before Shipp established himself as a vital creative force in his own right. Shipp is obviously well-learned in the piano tradition (and piano technique), but his highly unique style resists easy comparisons. Patterns weave into dense textures until beautiful melodic lines are revealed at their core. Powerful clusters yield to surprisingly graceful and swinging rhythms. Shipp is a pianist (and improvisor) who brings a composer's understanding to the elements of music. Musical ideas may fragment into shards, only to be reconstructed and shaped into new material. Simple elements expand in multiple directions to become the basis for complex structure. Layers of sound and texture often suggest 20th century classical music, though Shipp always manages to unearth a swinging propulsion underneath it all. Shipp's clarity of vision is remarkable. Even more remarkable is Shipp's ability to expand that vision. Shipp has collaborated with most of the vital artists in New York City's Avant Garde jazz scene. He has also worked with many of the premiere artists in underground electronic music, including DJ Spooky, El P, and Spring Heel Jack. Shipp's current trio features him with two of his most lasting collaborators: the powerful bassist (and guitarist) Joe Morris; and polyrhthmic, swinging percussionist Whit Dickey.

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (born 1971 in Oppdal, Norway) is one of the most important figures in creative music in Norway – and elsewhere – today.

Coming from a musical family of six sisters and brothers, and a father who played the organ, he started to play piano and guitar at an early age. He switched over to the bass guitar, playing in a gospel choir in his hometown when he was 12. At 18 he moved to norwegian city Trondheim, where he picked up the acoustic bass, and decided he wanted to study at the music academy there, a school that has shaped many of the influental figureheads of the norwegian contemporary scene today. In 1992 he got into the school, and studied there for three years with bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth, saxophonist Jon-Paal Inderberg and pianist Erling Aksdal.

Since 1995 Ingebrigt Håker Flaten have been a professional musician based in Oslo, and have been an important musician in leading scandinavian bands such as The Source, Element, Maria Kannegård Trio, Petter Wettre Trio, and between 1997-04 toured the world with the famed norwegian keyboard/piano player Bugge Wesseltoft and his New Conceptions of Jazz. Together with Bugge he performed with internationally established artists such as John Scofield (US), Joshua Redman (US) and Eric Trufaz (FRA).

Today Ingebrigt Håker Flaten have released more than 40 recordings and is focusing his work in Atomic, The Thing with Mats Gustafson, Atomic/School Days, Scorch Trio with Raoul Björkenheim, The Electrics with Axel Dörner, Free Fall with Ken Vandermark, Close Erase with Christian Wallumrød, Tore Brunborg Kvartett and is regulary doing solo performances.

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten..s creative and highly original bass playing has been highly regarded all over the world and he have done several performances with major international artists such as Evan Parker (UK), Paul Lytton (UK), Joe McPhee (US), Joe Lovano (US), Yusef Lateef (US), Tony Oxley (UK), Iain Ballamy (UK), Dave Liebman (US), Chris Potter (US), Zim Ngqvana (SA), Benoit Delbeq (FRA), Dr.L.Subramaniam (IND), Billy Cobham (US), Jean Luc Pounty (FRA). He has frequently appeared at important international jazz festivals in Den Haag, Liége, Montraux, Athens/Georgia, Cape Town, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Istanbul, Saalfelden, Nice, Groningen, San Francisco, San Sebastian, Lüc, Nancy, London, Perpignan, Molde, Perth, Kongsberg, Berlin, Houston and legendary clubs such as New Morning in Paris, Quasimodo in Berlin, Ronny Scotts and Pizza Express in London, Knitting Factory and Tonic in New York, Empty Bottle in Chicago, Blue Note in Yokohama and Hemlock Tawern in San Francisco.

His musical expression is based on the language of jazz and improvised music, acoustic and electronic, but his interest in rock and ethnic music also shows through his collaborations with the norwegian rock bands Motorpsycho and Cato Salsa Experience as well as his work through Rikskonsertene
In July 2003, as the first bass-player in Norway, he released his solo-CD "Double bass" on the norwegian label SOFA.

He has at the tender age of 33 already managed to establish himself as one of the most important exponents of the younger generation of musicians on the european scene today. In July 2004 Ingebrigt Håker Flaten was awarded Kongsberg Jazzfestival official "Vitalprisen" – the highest award for jazz musicians in Norway.

My European tour show tonight HIDE GALLERY Santa Cruz (10-11) details below

I have just returned from headlining 15 live looping festivals and events
in 8 countries in Scandinavia, Germany and the British Isles during
a long 2 month tour.

On that tour, the TRANSPARENT DAYGLO ORANGE PLASTIC tour
I came up with an unusual found sound/live looping show that
utilizes a lot of Dayglo Orange Plastic under
black lights (and bells and tuning forks
and vibrators and trumpet and overtone flutes and extended vocal
techniques and beat boxing and and and......

I will be performing this show at the very final performance at
the HIDE GALLERY in Santa Cruz, tonight (FRIDAY, July 11th)
from 10-11 p.m.

The HIDE , in case you don't know, is in the 2nd block
of FRONT STREET just South of LAUREL STREET downtown.

FRONT STREET curves to the right as you approach the hill
and that's where I'll be performing along with an amazing
electronica/pop band from LA, WOVEN (11 p.m.-12 a.m.).

They are one of my very favorite musical groups and they rarely
play in Northern California.

There will also be painters and airbrushers and dancers all
performing and creating while I play so it should be
a wonderful send off to one of the most creative institutions
that this town has seen in a long time.

I hope you can make it.

Experimental music has a home in midtown – or at least it’s been invited crash there for a couple of months . . .

Iconoclastic noise, exploratory improvisation, hypnotic droning, and authentic "musique brut" have for decades been strong undercurrents affecting movement in Houston’s music (and art). They deeply impact what we hear and feel on the surface. But these scenes (or phenomena – underground music is often not coming from a ‘scene’) also produce many of Houston’s most well-known musical exports (unbeknownst to most Houstonians – even in the music and “cultural arts” communities).

“They, Who Sound” will offer two sets sampling a diverse range of underground music in Houston (with a potential for visiting artists as well) in the cozy environs of Backroom (the space behind The Mink). These shows are not to be missed. These events are early, there’s a bar and it’s on the train route!

Pioneers of European free improvisation, Han Bennink and Peter Brotzmann made a landmark statement together in 1968 with "Machine Gun", the incendiary recording by the Peter Brotzmann Octet. The two continued their groundbreaking collaboration in duo, trio, and quartet settings. After 12 years, the contrast between Brotzmann's severe intensity and Bennink's gleeful anarchy had run its course. In 1980, they went separate ways, playing the last concert of their fruitful 12-year collaboration.

In 2004, Brotzmann organized a series of performances to reunite the duo after a 24-year hiatus. Time added perspective to the work of both artists. Though he still turns up the high heat, Brotzmann now reveals a lyricism at heart of his fury. Bennink's physicality is still prominent; but he has shown himself to be an heir to the tradition of the great swing drummers like Baby Dodds, Jo Jones, and Max Roach.

An art student with connections to the Fluxes movement, Peter Brotzmann rejected a career in the galleries after hearing a concert by jazz legend Sidney Bechet. Self-taught on saxophones and clarinets, Brotzmann played modern jazz influenced by Ornette Coleman and worked with American greats like Don Cherry and Steve Lacy. He was crucial at the beginning of Europe's free improvisation movement. Brotzmann developed a style similar to radical American saxophonist Albert Ayler (without much knowledge of Ayler), an uncompromising, screaming cry that challenged itself to greater heights of rage and energy. Time added subtlety to his sound. Bluesy lyricism and timeless muezzin-like calls emerged in later years. He is one of the most influential saxophone players in free improvisation.

One of the hard swinging drummers in jazz and improvised music, Han Bennink has a reputation as an anarchic and electrifying performer. Well known for his physicality and sense of humor, Bennink's concerts lie somewhere in the realm of virtuosic percussion display and dadaist performance. He is famous for coaxing unusual sounds from his drums, augmenting his kit with found debris, and drumming on any surface available (walls, floors, chairs, his own body). In Holland in the 1960s, Bennink was quickly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. He accompanied visiting jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. At the same time, Bennink helped to create a European improvised music that evolved an identity separate from its jazz roots. His collaborators in the worlds of free jazz and improvisation include most of the important artists in the music: Don Cherry, Misha Mengelberg, John Tchicai, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Steve Lacy, Eugene Chadbourne, and many others. Bennink has also performed with the punk rock band the Ex, with whom he has done two tours of Ethiopia.

Designing my EUROPEAN TOUR in public this WEDNESDAY 26 at META MUSIC at 8 p.m.

I"m doing an exploratory show this coming Wednesday, March 26th at META MUSIC (320 Cedar Street, Santa Cruz)
as a way of developing new material for my upcoming 10 week/10 country solo headlining found sound/live looping
tour that I leave for on May 1st.

I will also be on the bill with the Norwegian live looping guitarist Tellef Orgrim
and we will also play a short duet set at the end of the evening.

I will go on at 8 p.m. and play until 9.

Tellef will play for about 20 minutes (his decision) and then we will improvise at the
end of the evening.

I hope you guys can make it out. I have some really fun musical things in store for Wednesday.

Booking a circus in SF

Hey everyone,

I am part of a 10 person circus/music performance group called Criss Cross
Circus. We are based out of Hampshire College in western Massachusetts and this
summer we are planning a 4 week May-June tour from the east coast out to
Seattle in our veggie bus. One of our stops is San Francisco.

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding venues that would be interested in booking a small circus show, or bands that would be interested in sharing a show (we do a lot of work with bands in western Mass, so we have a lot of experience with being general crowd winder-uppers and visual entertainment). We would be pretty adaptable but the place would need a semi-legit stage (not just a foot and a half thing in the corner of a bar).

An artist of starkly contrasting styles, Tetuzi Akiyama gained international recognition as a member of Tokyo's "onkyo" scene of improvisers in the late 1990s. A groundbreaking and highly influential group, the onkyo musicians are known for zen-like subtlety, quietness and a remarkable use of silence. Akiyama's music can have these qualities, but his connections to blues and folk have always been clear. His acoustic performances are delicate, beautiful and expressive, often sounding like an intersection between country blues and traditional Japanese music.

Jozef van Wissem probably plays the most unlikely instrument in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance lute. He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free improvisation. Van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Van Wissem first came to be noticed a few years ago because of his conceptual approach to Renaissance lute music: he deconstructed existing compositions, for instance, by playing them backwards. He also composed his own pieces for lute, using palindromes and mirrored structures. His music therefore does not have a traditional linear progression, nor does it lead to a climax; rather, it stays at the same level of intensity. His music is quiet. It doesn't so much demand concentrated listening, but it brings the listener into a state of concentrated listening—an aspect that makes Van Wissem a natural partner to Akiyama's zen-like blues.

The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum was opened in February 1997. Intimate in scale, the Chapel Museum is the repository in the United States for the only intact Byzantine frescoes in the entire western hemisphere. These masterworks from the 13th century—a dome and an apse—were stolen out of a chapel near Lysi in the Turkish occupied section of Cyprus in the 1980s, cut into pieces and smuggled off the island by thieves prepared to sell them piece by piece. The fresco fragments were rescued from the thieves by The Menil Foundation with the knowledge and approval of the Church of Cyprus, the rightful owner of the frescoes. The Menil Foundation then funded a painstaking two-year restoration of the paintings. Numerous private donors helped fund the construction of the Chapel Museum, which combines rough stone, opaque glass and rich woods to extraordinarily spiritual effect. The Church of Cyprus is allowing a long-term loan of the frescoes in the building designed especially for them by architect François de Menil.

The work of Cooper-Moore is a testament to commitment, vision, spirit, compassion, and invention. Born and raised in the Piedmont Area of the Virginian Blue Ridge Mountains, Cooper-Moore played piano in churches as a child prodigy. In the early 1970's he moved to New York, and began his association with the fertile and revolutionary "loft scene" of underground jazz, collaborating with such musicians as David S. Ware, Marc Edwards, and William Parker. An accomplished composer and virtuosic piano player, Cooper-Moore quit public performance in 1981, depriving the creative music world of a unique and vital talent. He dedicated himself to youth, working intensively with a variety of communities. He has developed and implemented his own music curriculum; and has been sent around the country by Head Start to teach it to others. For the last 25 years, Cooper-Moore has assisted the disabled, the incarcerated, the at-risk, and the underserved; affecting them with his passion and understanding of personal and community progress through creative work.

In the early 90's, Cooper-Moore returned to public performance and was discovered by a new generation of fans. His unique talents were a revelation. He is a renaissance man, whose performances encompass honest and insightful storytelling, wide-ranging explorations on hand-made instruments, and intensely virtuosic piano playing. Cooper-Moore is the quintessential "unsung hero". He is an artist who understands the urgent need for unique voices. He delivers on his commitments, both in the community and on the stage.

Experimental Zithers Tribe formed

I have been playing with a lot of zither experiments that are out of the norm lately.
I had a custom MAXAPHONE and a custom BOWED PSALTERY made for me
and I've been doing experiments with really cheap childrens' toy zithers: preparing
them, processing them, putting them into weird found tunings and different ethnic tunings:
using contact microphones on them and processing them and looping them in weird ways.

Today, in the Weird Kalimba tribe one the artists who is most inspiring to me, Robert Collier
posted pictures of a kalimba/zither that he invented and built and it suddenly occured to me that
there are at least two of us out in the world who find experiments with these simplest of string
instruments fascinating.

So I started googling 'Weird Zithers' 'Strange Zithers' 'Unusual Zithers'
'Experimental Zither's' and discovered there
is an amazing world of people who step out of the box in their music and their inventions.

And I started the WEIRD ZITHERS tribe.

I doubt there will be a lot of members or even a ton of traffic, but it would be cool to turn each other
onto cool things that are out in the world that we have never heard of.

Theory runs thick in computer music. Come to think of it, a brisk commerce in signal is a symptom of noisy neighborhoods in general. This is understandable enough. How many other reasonably honest choices are there when confronted with an experience shortage? The whole computing machine dance up until now has been so short-- like a baby accumulating half-truths. Well, if the commonweal's experience-cupboard is bare, then fill it. Should be a perfect playground for fools.

Our doing this surely must have been kicked along both by the dissatisfaction with sleepwalking and by some growing appreciation of the edge as panacea. But our simplest and least obscure motive has probably been curiosity about how musical performance works when it is done on computing machines. When the timbre space goes infinite and has a memory, how do you go about assembling a meaningful piece of time for some particular group of people at some particular place?

The relative scarcity of cliche (both social and musical) in computer music creates this situation where a framework for listening somehow needs to be generated at the same time as it is filled with sound-- context and content made more or less simultaneously. There is this beautiful similarity to the historical interplay between worldly conundrums and abstract mathematics. It has been more than interesting to notice that this interplay turns out to be sampling in disguise.

The ambit of all this is really the same one music has always had: to set up a situation where the air shakes in a certain way and begins to give off inevitability outside of human language.

We use a couple of powerbooks, some controllers, a black box or two, an amplifier and some speakers.

Loud? No, it's not all that loud.

Robert Rich live recordings released...

Fake Science announces the release of three live recordings by ambient music pioneer Robert Rich. Two concerts in San Francisco (at Morrison Planetarium and Fort Mason) comprise over three hours of live material. These recordings have only ever been heard on the Dub Beautiful Radio internet stream, but now are available for digital download for the first time ever. These are the first live recordings released by Rich since 2001.

Robert Rich has a bold entry in the history of experimental ambient music. His recording career began in the early 1980's and spans over 25 albums and continues today. He is credited with co-creating the subgenres Dark Ambient and Tribal Ambient. Each recording displays intricate notes from his wide musical repertoire and include performances on processed steel guitar, bansuri, and his own custom built MOTM module synthesizer.

Live at Morrison Planetarium is a 90 minute set. Live at Fort Mason is comprised of two sub-60 minute sets, and begins with a 12 minute improvised piano solo - the likes of which has never been recorded or released.

Intentionally iconoclastic, lead singer James Euringer (who uses the stage name Jimmy Urine) often appears onstage at concerts wearing fishnet shirts, shorts or pants with the inside cut out (with the result looking similar to a skirt), and neon stockings. Euringer's outfits and antics are often the focal point of live shows. [2]
Another significant influence to the band is early 1980s culture[3]. MSI's music frequently contains samples of early '80s hip-hop or rock, as well as Atari-style beeps and tones[4]. Many of Urine's dress styles consist of juxtapositions of popular 1980s clothing or bastardizations thereof.
Mindless Self Indulgence is distinct from mainstream rock in their incorporation of lyrics about being gay, and related topics, into several of their songs - even going so far as to title one of their songs "Faggot." Also, Euringer and guitarist Steve, Righ? possess and use wide vocal ranges, stretching from tenor to high falsetto[5]. The band also has no qualms about using words deemed offensive by the mainstream, such as nigger and faggot, heavily in many of their songs. No topic is too offensive or sensitive not to be ridiculed[6]. Suicide (Backmask[7]), Paedophilia (Panty Shot), and masturbation (Masturbates) are just a few of the topics lampooned by the band.
They have opened for a number of popular modern bands including System of a Down, Korn, Sum 41, Mushroomhead, Insane Clown Posse, and Rammstein, as well as having now-popular bands open for them on headlining tours, such as My Chemical Romance, Deadsy, and Kill Hannah. They have also played many large musical festivals including Voodoo Music Experience in 2003 and 2005, as well as headlining the Mojave tent at the 2004 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. [8]

live dark experimental noise (and found sound/extended vocal techniques) show in San Jose this Saturday

By the way, I"m going to be doing an experimental show utilizing gongs, found objects and extended vocal
techniques at the Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose (366 South First Street between San Salvador and San Carlos)
this coming Saturday night with a creative touring group from Porltand, yourdrugsmymoney.
We will be doing a collaborative set at the end of the night and there is talk of putting this out on yourdrugsmymoneys' record label if it comes out well.

Because I've been so into Power Noize, Noise and Industrial/EBMish stuff lately, my performance will reflect a lot of that
sensibility.

I'm so excited, I just purchase a Feedback eliminator which will allow me to use very heavy distortion with vocals and found objects
without having all the uncontrollable feedback problems that occur with live microphones.

I'll also be projecting my new lo fi, toy digital video animations that I"ve been making at the show.
Come on out to an unusual creative show in the South Bay if you don't have anything to do.

It's 5 bucks at the door (8 p.m. start) and noone will be turned away for lack of funds.

The finished release of three discs is a limited edition of 1,000 in custom-made circuit bent packaging.

Past films include; Shuji Terayama's "Pastoral: To Die in Country", Alejandro Jodorowsky's "El Topo", Lotte Reiniger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed", Ken Russell's "Salome's Last Dance", Guy Maddin's "Cowards Bend The Knee" and "Heart of the World", Jan Svankmajer's "Little Otik", David Cronenberg's "Videodrome", Shinya Tsukamoto's "Tetsuo: The Iron Man", Trey Parker's "Cannibal: The Musical", and Vera Chytilová's "Daisies". Also we had two short film nights, which featured surreal/avant-gard films by Luis Bunuel, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, René Clair, Fernand Léger, Germain Dulac, Maya Deren, David Lynch, Kenneth Anger, Svankmajer, Maddin and The Brothers Quay.

Also, we viewed silent experimental films such as Samuel Beckett's "Film", Norman McLaren's "A Phantasy", Stan Brakage's "Dog Star Man, Part 4", and my own "Black Cat". I got my musician friends together and played live experimental free music to accompany the films. I'm hoping to do this again soon.

Who'd be up for a freeform periodic salon for artists and rubberneckers? I'm moving into a bigger place (from my closet) and I wanna have peeps over for an electronic orgy of sorts. Do you play/produce/engeneer glitch, IDM, 8-Bit, dnb, electro, hardcore, softcore, microSound, minimal, ambient, foundSound, melodic, etc... Just anything that dosen't seem to have a scene in the East Bay. I know SF can represent, but that's a bridge away.

Some structure like the following for each artist:

5 min Greeting/Intro (Who, where, how, why...)
30 min play (put up or shut up)
10 minutes Q&A (audience participation)

I am excited to announce that I will be featured at the ZeroONE Festival's Live Looping performance Wednesday, August 9th
at 10 p.m. at the ANNO DOMINI GALLERY in San Jose with a new show of found and invented sound and live looping. For the first time ever, I'll also be showing his recent experiments in lo fi video looping as he performs.
I'll also be debuting a piece written for the world infamous Door-Stop-a-Phone created by my dear dad, Art Walker, M.D.
at the show.

It will be a pretty rare South Bay appearance for me so I hope some of you can come out and check it out.

One of my favorite musicians, Matt Davignon will open the show with a wonderful performance of
minimalist live looping and digital delay manipulation, utilizing only a drum machine as a source for sound.

I'm just amazed at how creative and on the edge of music, Matt Davignon is. It's nothing less than artistically
astonishing the soundscapes that he creates with a drum machine as his only sound source. You'd never

beautiful and langorous; edgy and challenging; soundscapey and ambient yet never uninteresting.
It's like listening to a complex intelligent life distilled into a wordless language of emotion. Brilliant and

Palais Idéal: A Festival of Adventurous, Strange and Visionary Music
Chico, CA—Oct. 19-22, 2006

Le Palais Idéal: The Ideal Castle

Ferdinand Cheval was a postman from Hauterives, France who, one day in 1879 while walking his route, tripped on a strange looking stone. The stone intrigued him so he picked it up and put it in his pocket. Cheval returned the following day to collect more of the curious rocks, and he just never stopped. For the next 33 years he collected small and large stones from along his postal route and used them with cement and lime to build an ornate and surreal castle that he had daydreamed about on those long walks delivering the mail. Cheval had no experience building or sculpting and his neighbors quickly labeled him insane, yet he stuck to his vision and—working alone for those 33 years—completed his “fairy-like palace beyond imagination”: Le Palais Idéal.

Another dream: A large collection of musical oddballs and innovators gather together in the sleepy college town of Chico, Calif. and take the place over for a few days under the banner of Palais Idéal: A Festival of Adventurous, Strange and Visionary Music. This isn’t merely an experimental music festival; this is a call for weirdness of all stripes and for braveness in the name of new ideas. It goes down all over town Oct. 19-22, and most anything goes: art rock, experimental music, free jazz, noise, improv, outsider art, visionary music, sound art, field recordings, electronica, ambient, broken folk, homemade instruments, lowercase, multi-media, performance art, visual music, adventurous rock, post rock, conceptual music, song poems and the rest…

There won’t be any monetary guarantees for this first installment of Palais Idéal. But we will guarantee performers a place to stay (in the home of one of our volunteers), a pass to all the shows, and if logistics can be worked out, audio and video recordings of each performance will be made available to performers after the fest. After we pay for the posters and the soundpersons we’ll split whatever dough is left evenly between all of the acts.

This festival will be happening in the midst of Artoberfest, which is an effort by the city and local arts organizations to make the month of October into a power-packed festival of arts that will showcase Chico as a desirable arts destination. My hope is to build a fun and highly visible castle that will function as the unpredictable irregular heartbeat of the month’s festivities. And maybe, during this time when the city is focused on local arts programming, this unique event will inspire them to help support Palais Idéal in the future.

With even the smallest amount of additional backing, sustaining (and expanding) an annual festival of adventurous, strange and visionary music becomes a real possibility—which makes this dream not so crazy-sounding.

Bass-Baritone wanted for New/Experimental Opera Workshop

Hi all,

I am performing/collaborating in a workshop for a new opera, to be workshopped in late May, by a Danish librettist and a Norwegian composer. The work is in Danish this year, performed in Berkeley, and in English next year, performed in Norway with the same cast. It's an interesting experiment, oh, and the music is very good. It's based on a true story of a Danish inventor who builds a flying machine.

The person we're looking for can read, with classical chops, but also experienced in experimental music. He also needs to have good character expression.

This vocalist should be of open mind, a nice person, a good sport, flexible voice sounds, and able to leave his ego at home. I guess that means a grownup.

We believe that these new regulations, though created by well-meaning and rational public officials, are unduly restrictive on ongoing outdoor music operationsin Sharon Meadow (specific objections below) and could set a bad precedent for ongoing music festivals throughout the city.

We are asking as many of that can, to please go to the Park & Rec hearing and say something as simple as...
"I support ongoing live music in Sharon Meadow and believe that local music festivals should be free to book and produce the music THEY feel is best for their artistic vision. I oppose additional fee increases, sound restrictions, and forcing Festivals to pay for the extra technicians that the new rules demand."
We have the following objections:

* The End of Rock: The new restrictions of decibel levels between 96 and 102 db basically outlaws any music other than acoustic, or classical. This would be a TRAVESTY in the meadow where Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Janis Joplin, and the Grateful Dead first made their voices heard, not to mention BB King, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse etc. It is not up to public officials to REGULATE TASTE and this sound level does exactly that.
* We're Paying for Golfers? It was widely reported recently that Park & Rec is facing a severe budget crisis due to losses suffered at their golf courses. Thus it is drastically hiking its fees on Music Events to help make up for the budget shortfall. Music Festivals are the city's most positive economic and cultural events and should not have to pay golfers greens fees.
* End of the Small Festival: Festivals are being charged for "Maximum Occupancy" of the site, whether 12000 people show up or 500. This means that only big companies with huge budgets will be able to afford to produce events here, ending such beautiful free grass roots affairs as Comedy in the Park.
* What's so BAD About Music?: All music must end at 5pm ANYWAY, so why the additional restrictions? Because one, seriously ONE neighbor, who dislikes anything but opera has been on a personal crusade to curtail live music in "his favorite portion of the park". This personal crusade is about to overshadow the thousands who like to gather and enjoy music in public spaces. NO WAY. MUSIC IS GOOD. Reasonable people need to RESTATE THIS DEBATE. We should be making it EASIER for little people to put on events that have big cultural and artistic significance.
* Needless Additional Costly Beaurocracy: The new regulations demand that several "sound technicians" be on hand to constantly monitor the sound levels, a cost that the festivals will need to cover. This excessive over-regulation of art is also so expensive that it will probably put several existing Sharon Meadow events OUT OF BUSINESS.

I have been waiting to see this kind of a show, and now I’m here to experience it first hand! I saw a post on the Dark Ambient list about an experimental Butoh artist/turntablist by the name of Poison.

It seems like experimental turntablism is in the air.

I recently met an amazing young woman artist in Japan called
Busratch.

Check this quote about her music:

"Kobe wakes up to a turntable earthquake! If Matsushita Co. had known their Technics turntables would end up being so violently misused by post-turntablits BusRatch, the would have stopped production immediately."

Speaking of this master experimental turntablist, I found his website this week and purchased a very cool record with Japanese experimental turntablist Otomo Yoshihide.

I seriously want to produce an Experimental Turntablists Festival some time in the next year in the Bay Area or Santa Cruz.

Who else is doing experimental turntablism in the Bay Area.
I know of Matt Davignon's work and the woman named Pollywog.

Anyone else?

Would people be interested in attending an Experimental Turntablist show if I were to go to the trouble to produce one?

Philip Gelb will perform pieces on the Japanese shakuhachi flute inspired by and dedicated to the painter, Robert Kostka. Since meeting Kostka and encountering his work (at Meridian Gallery several years ago), Gelb has found that they both explore similar ideas. Both have studied intensely, traditional Japanese art forms and brought these ideas into a contemporary medium, painting and music. Kostka’s use of shading, timbre and time in his paintings is very similar to the way Gelb approaches the same concepts in sound. Gelb’s concert will be in the context of a retrospective of Kostka’s work at Meridian Gallery.

Philip Gelb is one of the most active shakuhachi performers and teachers in North America. He runs the Bay Area Shakuhachi School, teaching traditional and modern music to over 20 students. Although he performs traditional music (both Japanese and Jewish), he focuses on new and contemporary music. He has premiered numerous pieces for shakuhachi solo and in a variety of contexts with other instruments. Some of the composers he has collaborated with and premiered pieces by are: Pauline Oliveros, Chris Brown, Dana Reason, Jon Raskin, Phillip Greenlief, Matthew Sperry, Tom Baker, Christian Asplud, Hugh Livingston, William Ludtke, Yoshiaki Onishi, and Christopher Shainan. As a composer himself, he has written music for solo shakuhachi, for all his own ensembles and for shakuhachi and string ensembles. He frequently collaborates with choreographers such as Eri Majima, Koichi Tamano, and June Watanabe. Philip Gelb began studying shakuhachi in 1990 while a graduate student in Ethnomusicology at Florida State University with Dale Olsen. He then continued his studies in New York with Ronnie Seldin and now studies with Yoshio Kurahashi.

This concert series celebrates new, traditional and world music through monthly performances in the intimate setting of Meridian Gallery. Tom Bickley is the curator for this concert series. For more information please see our website at www.meridiangallery.org.

vocalist plays with fire

I have the ability to record a full length album in a professional studio, gig, and possibly soundtrack a short film. I am interested in melding genres like:: soul + swing + funk + trip hop .or. 50's jingle + electro + punk.

Be fooled. I am crazy; planning invasions, skanking through grocery stores, and singing in the parking lot. I like transistor reggae be-bop hootenannies through rock and rumble piano fiestas and into power trip switch hop on roof-tops to street corners. I have a ridiculous amount of lyrics and songs and am also a free style vocalist.

So what you got. I can sing to it. Play anything. Any fucking thing. I am not afraid. Wheels screeching sweat pouring fire punk, sultry sexed-up Thursday morning house, boogalicous body thumping beats, freedom rock for toy instruments, funk punch for your thirsty palette: I CAN JAM.

I am looking for people who thrive music: bass - stand up/electric, flute/bass clarinet, keyboards/piano, drums- hand/kit, horns, turntables, guitar, violin/viola, poets and funkdafied producers. I am interested in collaborating on specific projects while also finding a cohesive group of musicians that are truly into each other, can travel cross country, laugh till four in the morning and thrash a basement as hard as a stage. I am a rocket. Give me the go. I'll light the fire

getting started making music

hi all,

most of all i'm looking for someone (berkeley area?) that makes experimental music using a computer software-based studio, who will let me look over their shoulder, or even give me a tutorial of how they do it...

but a discussion here would be nice... this is coming from the perspective of a deep listener with almost no creative experience...

so, do people have recommendations for music software? i'm most interested in starting off with just microphoned stuff (i'm not aiming for hi-fi), but should i get a midi keyboard so i can do synthesizing?

i've been playing around with Cool Edit Pro to explore multitracking, and I downloaded Cubase but can't figure it out... I've been recommended to try Reason, but I'd like to see how it's used before I garble up my computer with more software...

Is it ultimately necessary to have a computer dedicated to just music recording?
